Paddlers enjoyed a sunny day for the Downeast Lakes Land Trust’s 9th Annual West Grand Lake Race, with light winds and comfortable temperatures creating ideal conditions for the four races. Children ranging in age from 3 to 9 participated in the “kids race” to Grand Lake Lodge and back, while some older children took on the 4 mile course.
The war canoe of Ron Bomberger, Chip Loring, Mark Ranco, and Chris Francis set a new course record for the 12 mile with their impressive finish time of one hour and 43 minutes. Terry Wescott and Dan Jones had the fastest finish on the 6 mile course in one hour and 11 minutes, three minutes ahead of Syd Lea who had the fastest kayak time. On the four mile course, Peter Cornwell finished first in 47 minutes in a pedal-kayak, followed by Bob Miller in 50 minutes in a solo canoe.
After the races, all participants gathered at the Grand Lake Lodge for a delicious picnic lunch and awards ceremony. Thanks to the many volunteers that helped with registration, safety boats, and the picnic.
