Community Conservation Technician and Field Crew Leader

Downeast Lakes Land Trust (DLLT) is based in Grand Lake Stream, Maine. We protect lakeshores, improve fish and wildlife habitats, provide public recreation opportunities, offer educational programs, and support jobs in the forest and on the water. We are dedicated to the Downeast economy and environment.

DLLT is seeking an experienced field technician to assist in land management projects related to forestry, fisheries and wildlife habitat, and recreation management.  In addition, this position will assist with DLLT’s ongoing outdoor education programs and public events.  The technician will gain broad experience assisting the work of a community-based conservation group engaged in landscape-scale forest conservation and management.  Specific duties may include assisting with the planning and implementation of habitat restoration projects, monitoring for wildlife and habitat, planning timber harvests, constructing new hiking trails, and performing routine maintenance of hiking trails and campsites in the 55,678-acre Downeast Lakes Community Forest.  This technician leads a crew of two other seasonal employees, and is responsible for modelling professional behavior, maintaining productivity and group morale, problem solving, and ensuring adherence to safety standards while in the field.

Qualifications:  Undergraduate degree (preferably in a natural resources or related field) and at least one year of relevant work experience required.  Must have an ability to work independently, excellent communication and computer skills, and experience working outdoors.  Must be willing to perform physically demanding tasks during non-traditional hours under field conditions that may include exposure to extreme heat, damp, severe weather, insects, and wildlife.  Experience with GPS and map and compass, data management, trail maintenance, and wilderness medical training desirable.  Experience with trail camera operation, trail construction, or vegetation monitoring are highly desirable. Experience supervising a small group or field crew a plus.  Personal 4-wheel drive vehicle is preferred.

Details:  DLLT is seeking a technician for ten weeks in the summer of 2019.  Start and end dates are flexible.  The position is paid $600 per week and includes basic field accommodations in Grand Lake Stream, shared with other seasonal staff.
