Despite a cloudy morning with rain in the forecast, 60 people participated in the 7th annual West Grand Lake Race to benefit Downeast Lakes Land Trust in Grand Lake Stream on Sunday. Several families completed the 4 and 6 mile courses, and six children participated in the “kids race”. After the races everyone enjoyed a cookout lunch at Grand Lake Lodge.
Two new course records were set. Robert Grosse of Milbridge kayaked the 6 mile course around Kole Kill Island and back in 59 minutes and 1 second, beating the previous record by six and a half minutes. Mark Berry and Asa Berry kayaked the 4 mile course around Munson Island in 43:12. Ron Bomberger and Paula Lunt set a new record for a two person canoe on the 12 mile course with a time of 2:06:12 (the 12 mile course record of 1:46:13) was set by a war canoe team in 2010). 2011 West Grand Lake Race results.
Thanks to all of the volunteers and sponsors that make this race possible – and a lot of fun!
