Monitoring Loons Downeast

June 21, 2011

The cry of a loon on a Maine lake is an iconic experience of summer.  Downeast Lakes Land Trust is monitoring loon reproduction on the Downeast Lakes again this summer, with support from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  Many of the Registered Maine Guides in Grand Lake Stream help with their knowledge and expertise on the Downeast Lakes.  This year we are partnering with Maine Audubon, and will be seeking volunteers to help with loon monitoring in the future.  Please let us know if you are interested!

Maridel Fredericksen is this summer’s loon monitoring intern.  She graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and hopes to one day conduct her own research on animal behavior.  Although she hails from Connecticut, she has spent every summer of her life in Maine and says she is “happy to be able to explore a new part of ‘the way life should be’”.  She enjoys swimming, hiking, swing dancing, and playing the trombone.
