Downeast Lakes Land Trust Internship – 2017 (1 position)

Community Forest Conservation: Habitat, Recreation, & Education

Downeast Lakes Land Trust is based in Grand Lake Stream, Maine. We protect lakeshores, improve fish and wildlife habitats, provide public recreation opportunities, offer educational programs, and support jobs in the forest and on the water. We are dedicated to the Downeast economy and environment.

This internship will provide broad exposure and experience assisting the work of a community-based conservation group engaged in landscape-scale forest conservation and management. The intern’s experience is highly adaptable depending on specific areas of interest.  The intern will assist with planning and implementing habitat restoration projects, conducting wildlife and habitat monitoring, planning timber harvests, coordinating citizen science data gathering, and performing routine maintenance of hiking trails and campsites in the Downeast Lakes Community Forest. The intern will also assist with DLLT events and ongoing education programs.  

Qualifications:  Undergraduate or graduate student in a natural resources related field, with ability to work independently, excellent communication and computer skills, and experience working outdoors.  Experience with GPS/map and compass, data management, trail maintenance, and wilderness medical training desirable.  Experience with timber cruising or with designing and delivering public information surveys are highly desirable. Personal 4-wheel drive vehicle is preferred.   

Details:  DLLT is seeking an intern for eight weeks in the summer of 2017.  Start and end dates are negotiable depending on the successful candidate’s academic schedule.  The intern will receive a weekly stipend of $400.  Lodging is not provided, but we can assist the intern with arranging local accommodations if needed.
