Forestry and Wildlife Habitat Management

Sustainable Forestry Certification:

On October 16, 2007, the Downeast Lakes Land Trust received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Forest Management certification from the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program. This certification means that DLLT has met a set of environmental, social and economic criteria and can sell the wood harvested from our lands as “FSC-certified” to purchasers that want to support responsible forest management.

Management Plan:

The Downeast Lakes Land Trust Forest Management Plan was developed by Seven Islands Land Company under contract to DLLT. A major addendum integrating wildlife habitat and timber management is currently being developed by DLLT in partnership with Maine Audubon using the Focus Species Forestry method.

Forest Management Services:

Orion Timberlands is contracted to provide forest management services on the Community Forest.

DLLT Forest Management Objectives:

·  Protect, maintain and enhance the quality and diversity of wildlife habitats.

·  Manage the forest to maintain and support traditional uses and values.

·  Manage the forest as a commercial forest enterprise.

·  Integrate management of timber, recreation, wildlife and water resources.

·  Manage for the protection and enhancement of aesthetic quality.

·  Manage the forest to maintain and enhance forest health and productivity.

·  Manage the forest to protect ecological diversity.

Forest Management Activity Since 2005:

·  Annual harvest plans have been developed with silvicultural and wildlife habitat prescriptions. Timber
harvest began in 2005. Two local contracting companies have harvested timber on the community
 forest.

·  A permit system for local uses has been developed, including firewood, evergreen tipping, and gravel.

·  Roads:  Signs have been installed to identify major roads.  Maintenance work has included roadside brush
removal, improved drainage, replacement of culverts, and grading.

·  Acquired new aerial photography and developed new timber stand maps.

·  Created eight wildlife habitat plantings, and planted 1000 black spruce seedlings donated by Washington
County Conservation Club, 600 American chestnut trees donated by the Maine Chapter of The American
Chestnut Foundation and seeded several acres with a herbaceous plant mixture for wildlife forage.

·  Began landscape-scale habitat management coordination effort with biologists from Maine Bureau of Parks
and Lands, Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and Passamaquoddy Tribes.
